Travel. Experience. Memories
Located just a short drive from Arusha City and Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha National Park is a compact but spectacular protected area in northern Tanzania. Covering an area of 552 square kilometers, the park is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity, diverse landscapes, and ease of access, making it a perfect introduction to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit.
Though often overshadowed by larger parks like Serengeti and Tarangire, Arusha National Park offers a unique combination of scenic beauty, rare wildlife, and outdoor adventure that captivates nature lovers, birdwatchers, and hikers alike.
Arusha National Park is dominated by Mount Meru – Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet). This dormant stratovolcano forms the park’s dramatic backdrop and is often used by climbers as an acclimatization hike before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro.
The park contains three distinct zones, each offering its own unique ecosystem and experience:
Mount Meru Crater: Towering over the park’s western section, Mount Meru is surrounded by forested slopes and alpine meadows, culminating in a magnificent crater and jagged ridges.
Ngurdoto Crater: Often referred to as “Little Ngorongoro,” this 3-km-wide, steep-walled volcanic crater in the southeast features lush vegetation and swampy floors that attract buffalo, warthogs, and baboons.
Momella Lakes: A chain of shallow alkaline lakes in the northeast, each with a different color due to mineral content and algae. These lakes are a haven for waterbirds, including thousands of flamingos.
The diversity of terrain — from rainforest and grassland to crater and alpine moorland — makes Arusha National Park one of the most varied landscapes in East Africa, despite its small size.
While Arusha National Park is not a “Big Five” destination, it compensates with unique species and high-density sightings in a serene, uncrowded environment.
Visitors can spot a variety of animals, including:
Giraffes (especially numerous here)
Buffaloes
Warthogs
Zebras
Bushbucks
Waterbucks
Colobus monkeys (best place in Tanzania to see them)
Blue monkeys
Olive baboons
Klippspringers and duikers in the montane forests
While leopards and hyenas exist in the park, sightings are rare due to the dense vegetation.
Arusha is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 400 bird species recorded. Highlights include:
Lesser and Greater flamingos (at Momella Lakes)
Silvery-cheeked hornbill
African fish eagle
Crowned eagle
Narina trogon
Hartlaub’s turaco
Migratory birds can be seen from November to April, adding to the park’s already impressive list of species.
Arusha National Park is one of the few parks in Tanzania where walking safaris are allowed, offering immersive wildlife experiences not possible from a vehicle.
Guided by armed rangers, walking safaris allow visitors to explore the forested slopes of Mount Meru, observe giraffes at eye level, and learn about medicinal plants, animal tracks, and local ecology.
A rare activity in Tanzanian parks, canoeing allows guests to glide silently past hippos, flamingos, and waterfowl while enjoying the lakes’ tranquil beauty with Mount Meru or Kilimanjaro in the background.
Standard game drives are available, particularly around the crater and lake regions, and provide excellent opportunities for photography, especially of giraffes and primates.
Often overlooked in favor of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers a challenging but rewarding climb. The trek takes 3–4 days and passes through forest, heath, and alpine desert, culminating in a sunrise summit over the crater rim with spectacular views of Kilimanjaro.
Arusha National Park can be visited year-round, but the best times are during the dry seasons:
June to October – Clear skies, ideal for hiking and wildlife viewing.
December to March – Good for birdwatching and lush scenery.
The wet seasons (March–May and November) bring heavy rain, especially in the forested areas, which can make roads slippery and hiking more difficult.
Being close to Arusha town, visitors have a wide range of accommodation options including:
Luxury lodges (within or near the park)
Mid-range and budget hotels in Arusha town
Campsites for trekkers climbing Mount Meru
Popular lodges near the park include Hatari Lodge, Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge, and Mount Meru Game Lodge.
Arusha National Park is one of the most accessible parks in Tanzania, located just:
40 minutes from Arusha town
60 km (1 hour) from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Its proximity makes it a perfect day trip for travelers arriving or departing northern Tanzania.
The park is managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) and plays a vital role in conserving the delicate montane ecosystems of Mount Meru. Surrounding communities, particularly the Meru people, are actively involved in conservation and cultural tourism initiatives, enriching the visitor experience and supporting sustainable tourism.

Uganda offers online visa applications, but many travelers find it easier to pay (US$100) and obtain a visa upon arrival at points like Entebbe International Airport. For travel into Rwanda and Kenya, it's recommended to apply for an East African Visa.
